Elephant

For no reason at all I turned on the TV about 70 minutes ago, and it was tuned to HBO. There was a strange low-budget looking movie on, and I had no clue what it was called. It followed several high-school students through what seemed to be their daily routines. In long continuous shot it showed things like a girl walking down the hallway, into the library, reporting for work as it seems, and she started putting away books. The movie was extremely basic, but it left me chilled. The movie ends with two boys, “gearing up” and shooting people and setting off bombs as their school. It doesn’t give any reason, and it doesn’t try to explain what happened, it just simply happened.

When it was all over, I got online and found that it is called Elephant. It won an award at the Cannes in 2003, and I also found a very fascinating review by Roger Ebert.

I’m sure most people will not like this movie, but I found it elegant in its simplicity, and brilliant in its emotionless matter of fact look a high-school massacre.

I suppose I have quite a bit to write about, since I haven’t actually had a site up for a while now. I’ll start with going up to Stillwater over Memorial Day Weekend.

(random note, I’m watching the Texas Rangers play right now, and Rangers player Brad Wilkerson #6, is batting 6th, on the 6th day of the 6th month in the year 06. Also the guy doing the color commentary was the 6th draft pick in 66. That’s a bunch of 6s)

For those of you who don’t know, I lived with three other guys for two years down in College Station. They’ve all graduated now, and have moved on to actual jobs, so we don’t get to see much of each other anymore.

James now owns the Red Rock Bakery in Stillwater, and he goes into work at 2am to make doughnuts 6 days a week, so he doesn’t really have the opportunity to get away. Michael, Sean and I decided we needed to go up and hang out with James for a weekend. We were going to go camping, but we ended up just not doing that. Sean ended up having work related stuff to do, so he wasn’t able to go, but Michael and I drove up to Stillwater on Friday. We did a little drinking, played a little Guitar Hero, and a little food. All in all we had a great time.

This past weekend I drove back down to College Station, and I gave my good friend Vanessa a call to let her know I’d be in town for a bit. Her friend Jen was down for the week, and I met them up at Hookah Station. We were there for a while, then we hung out, and Jen and I ended up talking the entire night, when we finally realized it was 8am. We crawled in bed and napped till around noon before I went back home and slept till around 4. Vanessa was at work, so I gave Jen call and we got some Sushi, and hung out the rest of the evening at Vanessa’s apartment waiting for her to get back so we could go catch 12:10 showing of the Breakup. As soon as Vanessa got back, she got a call from work, and had to go back. I passed out next to Jen and I think I had one of the best nights sleep I’d had in a LONG time.

I’m heading back up to Dallas this next weekend, Friday most likely, so I can hang out with Jen some more. I’m looking forward to the Mavs game on Sunday evening.
